Dialectics of Dependency: Struggle over the Fuel Imports Market in the West Bank

We conclude that the fuel crisis reflects a rising contradiction in class relations in the West Bank, which have enjoyed relative stability in the past two decades, due to a program of systematic impoverishment carried out by Israeli settler colonialism since 2023. Fuel, an essential and highly taxable commodity, emerges as a site of contestation between political and economic elites, whereas the former seeks to expand its tax revenue, and the latter seeks, via tax-evasion, to grow its profits. Palestinians facing impoverishment end up compensating, from their wages and time, for the losses of dependency.
