Dignity Isn’t Negotiable

The Palestinian Coalition for Economic and Social Rights Calls for Full Implementation of the Legitimate Rights of Palestinian Refugees and Rejects any Abuse of their Dignity

United Nations Relief and Work Agency for Palestinian Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) announced on 22nd January 2018 an international campaign under the motto “Our dignity is priceless”. The Campaign aims to fundraise for the Agency’s cost following American Administration decision to reduce its assistance to the Agency by over 50%

The US Administration’s decision falls within its support to the policy of the Israeli settler colonization state, which aims to put an end to the question of Palestinian refugees and maintain the City of Jerusalem as a fully occupied city. The same policy jeopardizes the very legacy and components of the Palestinian people, and jeopardizes its legitimate right to self-determination. The United States of America was a partner in the rise of the question of refugees following their displacement from their home towns and villages. It is directly responsible for protracting the Palestinian question. Today, it seems determined to waive the whole question

The American – Israeli violation of the rights of Palestinian refugees may result in administrative and legal dissolution of UNRWA, shifting its mandate to the UN Agency for Refugees. More explicitly, this means revoking their human rights to dignity, legitimacy and return to their homeland to fulfill their self-determination following years of forced displacement. Legally speaking, shifting the responsibility over Palestinian refugees to the UN Agency will only result in transferring them to host countries

For this reason, the Coalition calls upon the international community to bear full moral and historical responsibility for the already over 70-year calamity. It calls for immediate action to redress justice and full rights to dignity to all Palestinian refugees. It demands fulfillment of their right to self-determination and return to their homeland. It further appeals for support to UNRWA’s health and education programs and warns against acceptance of the politicization of international humanitarian law and abuse of power with disrespect of human dignity
